S.W.E.E.P. Sale Wombles Environmental Education Programme

Sale Wombles offers a unique complimentary educational activity for school children from Nursery to Y1 level  to local primary schools.

For several years, the Sale Wombles has been offering a "Mr. Womble" school activity for children of Early Years/Year 1 Programme.    In 2017 we have re-mastered this programme and we are delighted to welcome Sue Hunt as our classroom guest speaker, in the role as “Mrs Womble”. Sue has enjoyed a long career as a teacher of primary children in Trafford.   We were invited to stage this activity at Springfield School, where we addressed two Nursery classes, and then again at Brooklands School for seven classes comprising of Nursery and Y1.   2018 resulted in classes at Holy Family School and Springfield School.

The content of this activity falls within the EYFS guidelines for child early years education.

For Nursery and Reception Classes:

Communication and Language:    Understanding: children follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. They answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.

Physical Development:   Moving and handling: children show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. They handle equipment and tools effectively.

Understanding the World:     The world: They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.

For Year One Class

GUIDANCE FROM THE PSHE ASSOCIATION (for Key Stage One)

Living in the wider world – becoming a responsible citizen. Consider what improves and harms their local, natural and built environments and develop strategies and skills needed to care for these.

SUMMARY OF SWEEP ACTIVITY

SWEEP includes two parts, which fits into the established class time schedule.  Firstly Sue meets with your children in the classroom to talk about caring for their community and all creatures within it, with an emphasis on the impact of littering.    For this classroom exercise, we will need the use of an interactive whiteboard, projector.  Sue will be dressed in costume, and this section takes approximately 20 minutes.

After this session the children will be invited to carry out a practical litter picking exercise in their enclosed outside play area. The children will be provided with little yellow hi-vis vests and litter pickers. My role is to organise the logistics of the activity, and I will have scattered "clean" litter in an enclosed playground area. The teachers will assist the children to don their vests, and all adults will join in the fun. The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the impact litter has on our public spaces, and takes approx..30 minutes.  After this activity, the children will be provided with a souvenir badge, and either Womble colouring sheet or environmental word search puzzle.
